It's like when someone says something like, "Oh you poor thing" when trying to comfort someone else. Is that an insult? Are they implying that they're no longer a person when they say it? Or that they should be treated as an object? Not if you ask me.

I get your point, and I agree. I'm arguing for the sake of adding yet another possibility to the myriad of possible interpretations. Here it's usually black or white, and that does not necessarily have to be the case.
