When the new series was announced I don't think any of us went "I wonder if there will be a love triangle!?" The writers completely missed the field goal with that decision.

You're right. The show would have been much better without it. But, since it was in the puke WS/DC comics and WB is tied in with DC, the leghumping DC alum had to tow the company line. It's more than obvious they are using the comics for reference than anything else.
