I like this idea a lot.

Perhaps they could have made him fail them, and while doing so felt angry / resentful towards the other cats for beating him but in the end realizing his perception is wrong and that they are his friends trying to better him. Then he gives up his soul for them, which ends up being the true test as you said. That is good story telling imo.
