Everyone who complains about the designs from the new show should take a good, long look at these and consider themselves lucky. I would've hated it.

Remember, these were only the initial concepts, which got reworked. The more "final" designs can be seen in the leaked test footage.

Dave said that he worked for a while on these ideas and then the plug was pulled! He didnt even get paid by WB afterward. Its seems they then took Daves storyboards and Charlie Wens Lion O concept and made the leaked trailer

Well that really sucks that he didn't get paid. However, it's really a privilege to see something like this. To know how an industry pro would reinvent classic characters is always worth checking out.

Looking back at the test footage it's easy to see the influence design-wise this almost movie had of the reboot.

I might be in the minority but i actually like the feel and overall asthetics of the test footage trailer. It maybe be a bit corny but i love that almost dark reboot feel.
Almost like when Chris Nolan took over the Batman returns/Darknight franchise.

I didn't mind most of the visuals. But I thought it made Lion-O look kinda like an idiot. And I hated the design of the sword. One thing the new cartoon got right is keeping the sword mostly the same. There are a few changes in it, but not that much.

They aren't horrible, but I'm glad to know these were the very initial designs, rather than anything that could have been put into a finalized product.

Btw, looking around a little, there are some more storyboards at his Deviant Art Gallery ( DaveBullock's deviantART Gallery ), 12 in total.

And a color version of Lion-O:
