I just assume that Mumm-Ra somehow gets a hold of both the sword and scabbard and they both get twisted in someway to his advantage. He realizes how much power the sword holds, but then loses it back to the thundercats. Thus, gives him the sole reason to hunt down the cats to get the sword.
