Yes on death note. Hell girl is about a girl who is damed to serve the king of hell. People who have a hateful grude will sign in on her site at midnight, they they can make a contract. Japan has tons of "exotic" ideas for stories.

Putting too much themes in one story absolutely can cheapen the story.
Putting really little themes can cheapen the story too.
Putting crazy out of nowhere triangle is the worst of it all...especially if a certain female cat is in it.
