As for Mumm-Ra taking a whole episode to free the Eye from the Sword, don't forget that he didn't know how to break the spell when he had Jaga captured. He most likely was experimenting.

The bird took in back to the point he fell from he went on foot from there 3rd earth just be getting smaller . The spell prevents him from touching it but maybe not from harnessing its power
