Original Electronic Cats' Lair--what's it worth?

10 Attachment(s)
Hi everybody! I'm new to the community here, so take it easy on me. :)

I have an original electronic cats' lair in my possession, and I'm wondering what a possible value would be on it. I'm going to sell it but wanted to get a good estimate first.

The box has been opened but it's intact and contains ALL the pieces, down to the last screw. The mutant attack vehicle and control room are in styrofoam and the rest of the pieces were just placed inside the box. It still has the instructions and the stickers haven't been applied. It's never been assembled. Here are some pictures so you can see exactly what I have.

Can anyone tell me what I should sell this for? Should I put it on Ebay or just on a Thundercats forum (so a real fan will end up with it)? Someone told me that it was considered "Mint In Box". Is that true? There are a few rips on the outside of the box. Does that affect the value?

Thanks so much!!

Oh, and I have a bunch more pictures if that will help!

Really nice! Had the box been sealed it would be worth alot more. Toys that are in a box but opened are a bizzare sell, because you never know who to sell to. MISB guys want MISB, but loose collectors mostly dont need a box.

I sincerly hope whoever buys this leaves it as is. I would try taking offers on boards first considering ebay will rape you with fee's. I have two cat's lairs right now. One in the box and one loose (my childhood one). I wish I could add a third to the list cause I would make a killer display with those parts in a acrylic set up. Depending on the back of the box, its a tough call, I hate to put value on things (hell I dont even know what my pathro prototype is worth) but id probably offer you around 275 dollars for it as is without knowing the back of the box condition, stabillity of the package, etc...

Here are some pictures of the other sides of the box, if that helps. The last picture is a tear on the back of the box, towards the open end.

Ugh someone put new tape on the box. I hate removing that, half the time it destroys the box during restoration. Did you find it in a thrift store or something? (I assume by the name and the pictures of random clothes in the back ground) If so very cool find. In all honesty like I said its a tough market when you have a loose figure with a box. You never really know who thats going to appeal to, loose or MISB collectors, and if you get a loose collector they re-sell the boxes.

Just because I would hate to see this set broken up or tampered with after 20+ years, Id deffinatly offer you 275 for it. I dont really need another one, but I think a restoration project/display would be fun and would really preserve the toy for the future.

Man I'd love to have that.

Something along these lines I'd imagine

THUNDERCATS CATS' LAIR WITH ORIGINAL BOX | eBay

Kregermeister 02-23-2012 12:43 AM

And ebay takes over 30 percent :/ Problem lately with ebay is overseas are buying stuff, and they always claim it got damaged and get items for free. I stopped selling overseas, you might as well throw your items in a fire lol.

thriftycat 02-23-2012 01:38 AM

Is there any other auction site that won't take such a large percentage? Or is there any way to do an auction just in a forum? I don't really know how these things work. :/
Or if I do go with Ebay, can I specify that I'll only ship within the US?
Thanks so much for all your help!

adssse 02-23-2012 06:47 AM

With ebay you can specify areas where you will not ship. I usually only ship within north america. Not really familiar with other auction sites, but I would be interested myself...

I'll give you $300

EBay most certainly does not take 30%. They take about 9% of the final value, and Paypal takes $0.30 and 2.9%.

I dont think thats correct, your forgetting listing fee's, and shipping fee's, sellers tax....

thriftycat 03-16-2012 12:30 PM

Hi guys! I finally got the lair up for sale. I decided to go with Ebay after all. You can find it at eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices. Let me know what you think!

thriftycat 03-26-2012 10:30 PM

It sold for $700! Thanks so much to everybody for their help!

Lody 03-27-2012 09:46 AM

Ebay and paypal are happy about that

Tracer 03-27-2012 04:37 PM

Wow, congrats !

englishw 03-27-2012 04:46 PM

Wish I had that kind of money to drop on ThunderCats. That is a very nice piece! I watched the auction and had hopes of the bidding staying < $300, but I am very happy for you. It's always nice to get more than expected for an item you are trying to sell =o)

thriftycat 04-18-2012 06:33 PM

Unfortunately we had a problem with the buyer and the Second Chance offers didn't go through, so I've listed it again! Here's the link: 1986 Original Thundercats Electronic Cats' Lair--Mint In Box | eBay.

I really hate when people only post in a fan community to make money off them. If you were offering it privately here thats different, but seriously to keep pimping a ebay auction only..?

Lody 04-18-2012 08:05 PM

He was offered a fair price here that would have forgone the ebay fees...guess not

Yep. At first I figured they were a legit fan cause it said new to the community etc... however they just wanted to get info from us, then use our knowledge for personal gain on ebay. From the looks of the photo's its just some dude who works in a thrift store who got something donated, had no idea, joined here got info and wants cash. Doesnt take Batman to figure that out.

No one in their right mind would spend 700 on a opened cats lair with a beat up,re-taped box.

IndyCat 04-18-2012 08:29 PM

I wouldnt be surprised if there was some shill bidding going on.
